Perth Historical Events
The First Public Hanging at the Round House (1833)
The first public hanging in Western Australia took place at the Round House in Fremantle on June 1833. The Round House, constructed in 1831, is the oldest public building in Western Australia and initially served as a prison. The hanging was a significant and somber event in the early history of the colony, highlighting the harsh realities of colonial justice during that period.
The individual executed was Midgegooroo, an Aboriginal leader from the Noongar community, who was accused of resisting colonial expansion and participating in attacks against settlers. His execution was a clear demonstration of the severe measures the colonial government was willing to take to suppress Indigenous resistance. The trial and subsequent execution were controversial, as Midgegooroo was not given a formal trial, and the decision was made by the colonial authorities without his presence or representation.
Midgegooroo's execution marked a dark chapter in the relationship between the colonial settlers and the Indigenous population. It is remembered as a moment of profound injustice and has been the subject of historical reflection in the years since. The event serves as a reminder of the difficult and often tragic interactions between European settlers and the Aboriginal people during the early years of Western Australia's colonisation. The Round House, now a historical site and tourist attraction, stands as a symbol of both the early colonial justice system and the broader history of Fremantle and Western Australia.
